Design your own photography game
This activity marks the start of the A2 course for Year 12 students, following the completion of their Unit 2 externally set task. The idea is to challenge students to create a game that expresses one or more important ideas about photography. Students must conduct appropriate research, generate ideas, experiment with materials and techniques, refine and develop their work, document the process and manufacture a completed game to be played by their peers. A final evaluation, based on feedback from the players, will assess the relative success of the game, but also what the designer has learned from the process.

First idea - What's that genre?
My first idea was to create an app called What’s That Genre? This app would display a few images and you have to guess the genre. This could be done in a few ways, the genre can be written at the top and you have to select the one image that matches this. You would be scored on how many you get right in a row so your points get higher and higher like a combo or a streak. Then after a time period or something the game will end and then you are given how many points you have achieved. You can then compare with your friends to see who gets most points. As I haven’t had too much experience with app writing along with Xcode and Objective C. Therefore I may need to reconsider creating an app due to the limitation of time, however I could keep the same idea. You are given a few images and you categorise them into different genres almost like a puzzle, or even a game like snap. There are cards with a genre and a famous image on it, you then play it like a normal snap game when you match the same genre.
I began to create an app in which you are given four images and a genre, you then have to guess what image fits that genre. I wanted to get the idea quick as I knew it would be a long process to make on my own, so the more time I had the better the game would turn out. I created the opening screen sticking to a theme of purple, I then found a whole load of copyrighted images that I could use without getting in trouble and started to get to work. I created the first part to the game for the first section and then realise that the game was boring and didn’t really have an objective. You’re just guessing genres and will get boring after a few minutes so I decided to stop, and think of a new game idea.

Research on books
Six thinking hatsAs I am adding in different playable characters I wanted to know what colour scheme to have everything, after doing some research I found a book to read about six thinking hats. The book explains how people react when they are wearing different coloured hats, it changes the way they think which could influence my game. If I base all of the colours around the book I could have six different playable characters, and then depending what colour player you get could depend on who wins, due to the change of thought process. The colours are:

Final Idea
You're given a game of life board and dice - 6 sided, standard dice this is how you will get around the board, the board has different stories in photography, for example a famous image, as you go around the board you take part of these famous events, learning about evens in photography, one you get to the end of the board whoever has accumulated the most money from the events wins. This could depend if its accurate scaling or not. The players will be different colours on the board, the colours have been though about from the 6 thinking hats books, which has research on the way different colours effect people thinking, therefore picking these different colours will.can give you a different approach to the game. I will have to research different photographer game, I can have it so when you land on an event, you pick up a card that has money on it, so you only need to count the cards at the end of the game. This is just so its a lot easier for the players trying to keep a mental note of how much money they have. However there are also risks to the game, if you land on the square on the board then you will be effected by being behind. For example you lose your camera or something happens to it so you have to pay for repairs meaning you miss your turn, this means that there is some sort of worry in the game because you don't want to move forward and land on the wrong square. This also means if you get really lucky and get loads of money at the start, it doesn't mean you've already won, because you can lose money and miss turns so other players catch up.
